NKDA flags 38 bldgs for illegal commercial use
The crackdown has been on for a fortnight

Kolkata: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has issued stop-operation notices to owners of 38 residential buildings across New Town in a fortnight for unauthorised commercial use.The authorities have been conducting regular surveys and inspection of buildings to identify and crack down on violations of building use rules.According to inspections of the identified buildings, the authorities have found that the building owners have violated this condition, as records show that no permission for commercial use was granted by the NKDA. “You are directed to remain restricted from carrying out any non-residential activities in this manner, in your building,” the notice states.Officials said it has been found after inspections that such activities have been going on in the premises without prior permission and that the building owners failed to produce any relevant document indicating otherwise,” said an official, adding that many of the units have been operating without any fire licence.Officials said that residents in New Town are allowed certain commercial use of residential buildings up to 40% of the total floor area of their buildings, subject to terms and conditions as it was ordered by the state govt back in July, 2015.The first such condition was that residents have to obtain prior permission from the New Town Kolkata Development Authority.
