Six days after Asiad gold, Lovlina comes home to a sea of pride

Guwahati: Six days after winning Asian Games gold, Lovlina Borgohain returned to a hero’s welcome in her native village in Assam’s Golaghat district.Borgohain arrived in Baramukhia village on Thursday, where residents welcomed her. She thanked the people of Assam and said she would continue working hard to win more medals. She also urged young athletes to work hard and make Assam and the country proud.“It feels really good to arrive in Bokakhat, meet so many people, and get such a warm welcome since coming to Assam. I am receiving so much love from the people, and I will try to keep winning medals like this and keep getting this love. I would just tell all the young players that everyone can get as much love as I am getting. Just work hard and make our Assam and our country proud,” she said.Borgohain landed in Guwahati on Tuesday night. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma honoured her with a cheque for Rs 50 lakh and announced that she would be promoted from deputy superintendent of police to additional superintendent of police. She was appointed DSP after winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.Cabinet minister Atul Bora felicitated her at a programme organised in Bokakhat by the Bokakhat District Sports Association in association with the Bokakhat sub-divisional administration.“Lovlina is an invaluable asset of Assam. Our beloved Lovlina is not merely a boxer; she is an indomitable symbol of women’s empowerment in India. Her journey of dreams, which began in Bormukhia of Golaghat district, has today introduced Assam to the world with a new identity,” he said.Bora said Borgohain made Assam and the country proud by defeating China’s Bao Ziyi 5-0 in the women’s 75kg final at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.“In fact, this victory was a rare and glorious gift from the ‘Golden Girl’ to her motherland Assam and the nation on her birthday on Oct 2,” he added.Bora said Borgohain’s journey has inspired young people. “Her journey is a shining example of how no goal is impossible with hard work, sacrifice, self-confidence and strong determination. We hope that in the near future, Lovlina will win a gold medal at the Olympics and hoist the national flag at the highest podium in the world. May every punch thrown by Lovlina become a symbol of the courage and determination of the new generation to turn their dreams into reality,” he added.
