Surat: An eight-year-old girl was raped in the Ichhapore area of Surat on Monday. Police arrested the accused, a 36-year-old man, on Wednesday night. He suffered a forehead injury on Thursday after an alleged suicide attempt in the police lockup.Assistant commissioner of police Sweta Daniels told TOI, “We received a complaint for rape on an 8-year-old girl in Ichhapore. The accused, identified as Manish Rai, allegedly raped the girl on Monday and threatened her, to reveal it to anyone. The girl developed a pain and told her mother what had happened on Wednesday. After this, we registered an offence and arrested Rai late on Wednesday.” Police said Rai was in the lock-up when he decided to attempt suicide.“He pulled out the drawstring of his innerwear and tied it to the bars. The drawstring broke and he fell, injuring himself on the forehead. Our alert ASI Jesing rushed to the lock-up and took the accused to hospital to save his life,” Daniels said.Rai and the victim’s mother knew each other and visited each other’s homes. On Monday, the woman left her daughter at Rai’s house for lunch while she went out for some work. Police said Rai raped the girl while she was alone and threatened to kill her if she spoke of the crime. Rai had come to Surat from Bihar for work.
