Traffic cop & grocery shop employee held over guest worker’s death in Chennai

Chennai: Police on Thursday arrested a traffic police constable and a 26-year-old man in connection with the death of a 24-year-old guest worker near Sriperumbudur on Wednesday. The case was initially registered as a suspicious death but was altered to culpable homicide not amounting to murder after a postmortem revealed internal injuries.The deceased, Sailesh Kumar, a native of Ghazipur district in Uttar Pradesh, arrived at Sriperumbudur Sipcot on Oct 5 along with eight others in search of work. They secured jobs at a canteen and rented a house owned by S Gnanamoorthy, 33, a constable attached to the Guduvanchery traffic wing. A grocery shop operated from the front portion of the house, where A Arif, 26, worked, while another portion was rented out to guest workers.Police said Sailesh, who was drunk, repeatedly asked Arif for gutka on Tuesday night. An argument broke out after Arif refused to sell it, following which Sailesh and three of his coworkers manhandled him.Arif complained to Gnanamoorthy, and the two allegedly assaulted Sailesh and forced the workers to vacate the premises. A company supervisor later arrived and took them away. Though Sailesh left the premises, he was found dead in the rented portion of the house on Wednesday morning. Sriperumbudur police initially registered a suspicious death case and sent the body to Kancheepuram Govt Hospital for postmortem.The autopsy revealed a liver injury and internal haemorrhage. Police said the findings established that the injuries sustained during the assault had led to his death. Based on the findings, police altered the case to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and arrested Gnanamoorthy and Arif on Thursday.
