Hyderabad: A home guard driving a police vehicle is on the run after he accidentally hit a 58-year-old assistant sub inspector (ASI) near Manoor police station in Sangareddy district on Monday night, killing him. The home guard, Rama Rao, has been booked for causing death due to negligence.ASI K Govind Nayak and constable Venkatesh had stepped out of the Manoor PS for night patrolling duty at around 10.15 pm Monday and Rama Rao was expected to pick up the two in a Bolero.“The ASI had reached the tehsildar’s office, a designated point for the patrolling team to visit, when the vehicle driven by Rama Rao hit him from behind. Nayak fell on the road and sustained a head injury. Rama Rao and the constable rushed him to the Narayankhed govt hospital in the same vehicle. The ASI succumbed shortly afterwards. We believe that Rama Rao panicked, abandoned the vehicle at the hospital and fled,” Narayankhed circle inspector G Srinivas Reddy said.Nayak’s bereaved family members asked officers to verify if the home guard had deliberately caused the accident due to a personal grudge. “The ASI’s son, Suprith, lodged a complaint to know the cause of the accident. We have also recorded the constable’s statement as he was an eyewitness. Prima facie, it appears to be an accident. We will investigate why Rama Rao drove the vehicle negligently and why he did not see the ASI standing before him. We have sent out a team to look for Rama Rao,” the CI said. The ASI is survived by his wife and three children, including two sons and a daughter. Police officials are reviewing CCTV footage of the accident to know more about the accident.
