Aizawl: Mizoram is among the Indian states where women enjoy the best status, though there remains considerable scope for further improvement, Justice Helen Dawngliani, additional judge of the Gauhati high court, said on Tuesday.She was speaking at a sensitisation programme on women-centric laws organised jointly by the Mizoram State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) and the All Mizoram Women Federation (AMWF) at the I&PR Conference Hall at Lianchhiari Run in Aizawl.Justice Dawngliani, who was the chief guest, said greater awareness of laws concerning women was important and welcome. Such laws, she said, were not meant only for legal professionals but were relevant to everyone and could be applied in everyday life.She stressed the need for women to understand both their rights and responsibilities under the law. Women, irrespective of their social position, were among the most important pillars of society, she said.Justice Dawngliani urged women to give due importance to their responsibilities towards their families, while reminding them that they had the ability to bring about change at every level. She also wished the participants a fruitful and beneficial learning session.The programme was chaired by AMWF president Dr Jane R Ralte, who welcomed the participants.Advocate Lalfamkimi spoke on the Mizo Marriage and Inheritance of Property Amendment Act, 2026. Senior advocate Dina Ri T Azyu outlined the rights and benefits available to women under various laws.MS Dawngliana, second OC of the Cyber Crime Police Station in Aizawl, addressed the topic “Protecting Women from Cybercrime”.AMWF vice-president KR Chhingpuii summed up the presentations, while MSLSA joint secretary Thomas Lalrammawia proposed the vote of thanks, bringing the programme to a close.
