Panaji: Goacan, a consumer body, has written to the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) to immediately remove the encroachment on the footpath and public parking area near Panaji ferry wharf suspected to have come up over a fortnight. The consumer body also requested CCP to enquire how the encroachment was constructed without its knowledge.Goacan coordinator Roland Martins said the encroachment at the entrance to a property leased by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) poses a direct risk to road safety and traffic management. He said they want CCP to enforce an SOP for routine weekly inspections of major pavements and public parking areas to ensure immediate action against encroachments. While Martins acknowledged the need to support tourism and business and the revenue generated within the jurisdiction of CCP, he said it can’t be at the cost of inconvenience and risk to pedestrians, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.Citing the recent judgment, he said govt ought to protect pedestrian rights and remove encroachments.
