Hyderabad: Cygni Energy Private Limited and Indus Towers Limited have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore sourcing and deployment of energy storage solutions for India’s telecom tower infrastructure, the companies said on Monday. The companies will look at Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing capacity of up to 1.5 GWh to meet rising power requirements across telecom sites. They will also assess advanced battery technologies for telecom use, with an eye on improving backup reliability, energy efficiency and sustainability in passive infrastructure operations. An IIT Madras-incubated and Hyderabad-headquartered energy storage technology and manufacturing company, Cygni Energy said the initiative would help build domestic scale and technology readiness for India’s digital infrastructure.Cygni Energy founder and chief executive Venkat Rajaraman said the company plans to develop capacity of up to 2 GWh and expand its product portfolio from current 100Ah solutions to higher-capacity 314Ah systems and emerging chemistries.“For us, this initiative goes beyond supplying batteries,” Rajaraman said, adding that the focus would be on scale, reliability and Indian engineering for future-ready storage systems.Indus Towers is among the world’s largest telecom tower infrastructure companies, with energy demand spread across a large network of sites. Telecom towers depend heavily on backup power to ensure network uptime, making storage systems a key component in reducing diesel use and improving operating resilience.Prof Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Institute Professor at IIT Madras and chairman of ITEL Foundation, said collaboration between users, startups, manufacturers and technology institutions could accelerate adoption of energy storage in India and support telecom applications.
