Chandigarh: Panjab University Sunday elected six members to its Senate from the faculty constituencies, completing the faculty-wise phase of the university’s long-awaited Senate elections.Elected members include Prof Jaskaran Singh Waraich (Faculty of Arts), Prof Sarabjit Singh (Faculty of Languages), Prof Navdeep Goyal (Faculty of Science), Dr Deepak Kumar Gupta (Faculty of Medical Sciences), Prof Virender Kumar Negi (Faculty of Law) and Prof Rajat Sandhir (Combined Faculties).Polling for the six faculty seats was held on Oct 4, the final scheduled phase of the election process.The combined faculties constituency represents Business Management and Commerce, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Design and Fine Arts, Education, Engineering and Technology, and Pharmaceutical Sciences.The Senate polls are significant as they mark the first full election to the university’s governing body since the previous Senate’s term ended in Oct 2024. The restoration of the elected Senate had sparked prolonged protests and political debate before the election schedule was finalised.Elections for other constituencies, including registered graduates, affiliated colleges and teaching faculty representatives, had been held earlier.With the faculty seats now filled, the process of constituting Panjab University’s 91-member Senate has moved a step closer to completion.
