Chandigarh: The MC has processed and dispatched much of the construction and demolition (C&D) waste it received, converting it into sand, bricks and aggregate (granular material made from crushed or processed construction debris). The civic body received between 1,500 metric tonnes (MT) and over 2,700 MT of C&D waste from across the city from April to September. Also, since the MC could not find a bidder to run the C&D waste plant, it is operating the facility on its own. The authority is collecting the waste through multiple designated C&D waste collection centres. As per the MC, the authority earned around Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh each month from April to September. In total, the MC collected around Rs 50.5 lakh in the first six months of the current financial year by selling products made from C&D waste.“Around 23 employees have been hired to run the C&D waste plant in the absence of a private bidder. The MC engineering department is running the C&D waste plant on a no-profit, no-loss basis. Engineering officers are monitoring the work daily and submitting daily collection, processing and dispatch reports to their seniors,” sources told TOI.Sources also said that the articles made from C&D waste are sold to government agencies, which are using the material in ongoing construction works. “As construction material is quite expensive these days, the MC is getting many orders for these items from government agencies,” sources said. The civic body has turned down a proposal to consider or accept a single tender to run the C&D waste plant. It will prepare a new RFP. The tender to run the C&D plant has been floated four times, but no bidder responded.
