Lucknow: Former UP DGP Prakash Singh said on Thursday that police service provides a powerful opportunity to serve society and that remaining steadfast in one’s principles is the foundation of success.Singh, a Padma Shri awardee, recalled the challenging circumstances in which his career began, including his nearly four-year tenure in Nagaland during the insurgency. He later served as Assam DGP amid the state’s insurgency challenges and worked in Uttar Pradesh at a time when organised crime and mafia activities posed a major challenge.He also recalled his tenure with the Border Security Force during the peak of militancy in Punjab.Speaking during the launch of his book in Lucknow, Singh said technology was used to strengthen border fencing, which helped check the movement of terrorists from Pakistan and gradually reduced militancy.He also spoke about his experiences combating terrorism in Jammu & Kashmir and referred to attacks on his life during his career. He attributed his survival to the grace of Goddess Durga and dedicated the book to the deity.Explaining his approach, Singh said people who are distressed or facing injustice turn to the police for help. Helping such people and treating them with sensitivity should be viewed by police personnel as an opportunity to serve society.Singh said the blessings received after resolving a victim’s problem were no less than divine blessings.Spiritual leader Swami Shri Dharmabandhu described Singh as a symbol of dedication to duty, nationalism and integrity and said his contribution could serve as an inspiration for future generations.
