Modern road safety, police modernisation to strengthen traffic management, says DGP

Lucknow: DGP Rajeev Krishna on Thursday said modern road-safety measures and ongoing police modernisation would strengthen traffic management and improve safety for road users across Uttar Pradesh.Speaking at a ceremony in Lucknow, Krishna said the occasion brought together three key elements of police service: recognition of bravery and exemplary duty, reinforcement of road safety through upgraded resources, and preservation of the experience and ideas of police personnel. During the event, 16 President’s Police Medals for Gallantry and 10 Chief Minister’s Police Medals for Gallantry were presented.The DGP also referred to the posthumous conferment of the Kirti Chakra on late inspector Sunil Kumar, saying his sacrifice would remain a lasting source of inspiration for the force.Krishna said that, under chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s direction, 87 modern interceptor vehicles were being deployed in districts reporting higher numbers of road accidents. He said the Zero Fatality District scheme had been implemented across all 75 districts, with police focusing on reducing accidents and deaths through enforcement, engineering, education and awareness, electronic enforcement and strengthened emergency response.Sharing comparative data, he said that between Jan and Aug 2026, the state recorded a 7.89% decline in road accidents, a 9.08% fall in fatalities and an 8.1% reduction in injuries compared with the same period last year. He said these measures helped save more than 1,100 lives.Highlighting technology-driven traffic management, Krishna said the police-developed ‘UP Gati’ application was enabling 24×7 live, real-time monitoring of traffic on 109 city routes across 20 cities.
