Phone software update leaves Ahmedabad man poorer by Rs 1.6 lakh

Ahmedabad: A software update on a mobile phone was followed by the disappearance of several applications and the unauthorised transfer of Rs 1.6 lakh from the bank account of a Memco resident, police said.The victim, Diwansingh Kori, a 40-year-old loading-rickshaw driver, approached Shaherkotda police after discovering that multiple transactions had been made through his Google Pay account without his knowledge. A complaint was registered against the account holders and unidentified persons allegedly involved in the transfers.According to the complaint, Kori was at home on Aug 6 when his phone suddenly began a software update. He later left for a tempo-rickshaw booking but found that the phone would not switch on.Kori sought help from his friends, Pushpendra Raghuvanshi and Aniket Chandravanshi, who used his Gmail ID and password to restart the device. When Kori tried to open Google Pay to receive payment for the tempo booking, he found that the app and several other applications had disappeared.He reinstalled Google Pay from the Play Store and used it to receive the payment. However, when he checked his bank balance, he found that Rs 1.6 lakh was missing.The transaction history showed that Rs 6,000 and Rs 54,000 had been transferred on Aug 5 to an account identified as Shivani Ahirwar. Another Rs 30,000 was transferred the same day to Shamim Ahmed through Paytm, while Rs 66,000 was transferred to Bharath N on Aug 6.Kori immediately contacted the cybercrime helpline. During the subsequent inquiry, he was informed that Rs 60,000 had been transferred to a Bank of India account, Rs 66,000 to an Axis Bank account and Rs 30,000 to a Paytm account.Kori later approached Shaherkotda police and lodged a complaint. Police are investigating the transactions and the role of the identified account holders and other unidentified persons.
