.Guwahati: It took Walter White five seasons to turn a high-school chemistry teacher into “Heisenberg,” the meth kingpin of “Breaking Bad”. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says it has taken his government five years to do the opposite — chase down a real narcotics network. In a post on X, Sarma invoked the fictional drug lord by name, “Heisenberg had 5 seasons. In Assam, our 5-year crackdown tells a different story: Nearly 27,000 arrested. 715 kg heroin, 1,51,833 kg ganja and 2.13 crore meth tablets seized. For me, the formula is simple: break the drug networks, protect Assam’s future.”Sarma said the figures represented the outcome of Assam’s sustained anti-drug campaign. The drive, which began in 2021 soon after the Sarma-led second successive NDA government was sworn-in the state, has focused on identifying and disrupting trafficking networks involved in the movement and distribution of heroin, cannabis and synthetic drugs.Assam’s location and road links make it an important corridor for narcotics moving through the northeast. The large quantities of heroin and methamphetamine tablets seized by police point to the presence of organised inter-state trafficking routes. But arrests and seizures do not automatically establish that the networks have been dismantled — arrests include accused persons at different levels of the alleged trade, and convictions depend on the outcome of investigation and trial.
