CHENNAI: A 22-year-old history-sheeter was arrested on charges assaulting a man, his wife and his sister following a quarrel in the Secretariat Quarters area of Purasawalkam on Monday night.The man, aged 25, and his 24-year-old wife are living in Purasawalkam with their child. On Sept 28, the couple, the child and the man’s sister went to an eatery to have food and were standing on the Irattamalai Srinivasan Road in Thidir Nagar. Two men, identified as Arul and Saravanan, allegedly picked a quarrel with him, abused him and attacked him with an iron pipe. When the women intervened, the duo allegedly assaulted them, pushed them to the ground and threatened to kill them before fleeing.Based on the woman’s complaint, the G-5 Secretariat Quarters police registered a case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.A police team led by the station inspector arrested Saravanan alias Sundu Saravanan, 22, of Thidir Nagar, on Sept 28. An iron pipe allegedly used in the assault was also seized.According to police, Saravanan is a history-sheeter at G-5 police station and has eight previous cases, including assault and robbery.He was remanded in judicial custody. Police launched a search for Arul, the other suspect who was absconding.
