Gurgaon: GMDA is set to examine the feasibility of an underpass or elevated corridor at Sikanderpur to improve traffic movement. Besides, a comprehensive redevelopment plan will be prepared for IFFCO Chowk in coordination with National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The authority is also examining the feasibility of constructing a footbridge along MG Road near the malls.GMDA officials said a traffic consultant would be engaged to assess the existing movement at Sikanderpur and prepare a detailed project report to determine the appropriate grade-separated solution. The proposals — on Sikanderpur and IFFCO Chowk — were discussed on Monday during a review of traffic and infrastructure along MG Road by GMDA CEO PC Meena.Sikandarpur is a major convergence point for traffic from IFFCO Chowk, Golf Course Road and Cyber City, with vehicles also approaching from the Mehrauli side. The junction also has an existing underpass, while two metro corridors — including Rapid Metro and Delhi Metro yellow line — cross the area. Traffic from different directions converges at the intersection, resulting in frequent conflicts and slow movement, particularly during busy hours. The congestion is compounded by traffic moving towards Bristol Chowk and Cyber City stretches.A GMDA official said, “This junction witnesses major traffic conflicts as vehicular movement from multiple directions converges at this point. At the same time, an existing underpass and two metro lines limit the available space for intervention. We will engage a consultant to study the traffic movement and examine how circulation can be improved, including whether a grade-separated solution is feasible.”As for IFFCO Chowk, Meena directed the officials to coordinate with NHAI for a comprehensive redevelopment plan. An expert will study existing traffic patterns and suggest measures to improve vehicular movement and pedestrian safety. The plan will also assess existing utilities and identify infrastructure that needs strengthening as part of the redevelopment.“The redevelopment of IFFCO Chowk should be planned comprehensively, taking into account traffic movement as well as existing utilities and future infrastructure requirements,” GMDA CEO said. This comes a month after a sinkhole developed on the service road at IFFCO Chowk due to leakage in a sewer line. The sinkhole, which was around 10 feet wide when the road caved in, widened to more than 30 feet within hours.As regards the footbridge along MG Road near the malls, officials have been asked to identify suitable entry and exit points so that pedestrian crossings can be provided without adversely affecting traffic movement. The proposals form part of a wider plan to improve MG Road, with GMDA focusing on pedestrian safety, organised parking, removal of encroachments and upkeep of public infrastructure.GMDA officials said dedicated patrolling teams have recently been formed for MG Road to monitor encroachments and carry out enforcement. “The teams will regularly patrol the corridor to prevent footpaths from being occupied and ensure uninterrupted pedestrian movement,” the official said.The authority is also examining designated two-wheeler parking spaces along the road. Other measures under consideration include pedestrian signals and designated crossings at suitable locations, removal of illegal wires and signboards, clearance of wild vegetation, additional plantation and repairs to manholes and bollards.At the Ghitorni-side entry to MG Road, the GMDA CEO has directed its teams to improve adjoining roads and green belts. The enforcement wing has also been asked to remove building material from the area and examine the possibility of further developing the available space.
