Pune: Two daily-wage workers were arrested after they allegedly took Rs4.44 lakh from a jeweller in Chakan by allegedly pledging fake gold chains.The duo was identified as Abhijit Gadale (22) of Kesnand and Samir Mane (33) of New Mumbai.Police sub-inspector Pawan Bande of North Chakan police said between July 17 and Sept 9, the duo had pledged three gold chains with the jeweller and taken Rs4.44 lakh against them. “Before giving money to the duo, the jeweller had verified the chains and did not find anything suspicious. The duo had asked the jeweller to melt the chains, if they failed to return the money.”When the jeweller melted the chains, he found they were not made of pure gold. “On Saturday afternoon, the duo again came to the jeweller’s shop and tried to pledge a gold bracelet. The jeweller informed us; we laid a trap and took them into custody. The bracelet they were trying to pledge was made of fake gold as well,” Bande said.“We are investigating whether the duo had similarly cheated other jewellers, and from where they obtained the metal that resembled gold,” Bande added.
