Gorakhpur: Antibiotics should not be given to children at the first sign of fever and instead parents should monitor their condition closely, paediatricians said at a seminar organised by the Deoria district unit of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP).Paediatrician Nehal Shah of Mumbai said, “If fever persists for four to five days, investigations should be conducted based on the child’s clinical condition and the reports assessed properly before deciding on treatment.”Specialists from various medical colleges discussed fever management, appropriate investigations and warning signs requiring immediate medical attention.Sanjeev Joshi of Nagpur said test reports should be considered alongside the child’s symptoms and overall condition.Prof Ghanshyam Choudhary, head of department at Jhansi Medical College, said excessive lethargy, shock and refusal to eat or drink could indicate serious illness, requiring immediate hospitalisation and treatment after clinical assessment.DK Singh of Gorakhpur Medical College advised against unnecessary combinations of ibuprofen or mefenamic acid with paracetamol.IAP district president JN Pandey presided over the seminar, while secretary Pramod Tripathi conducted the proceedings.
