Jaisalmer: Police seized 1.530 kg of heroin, allegedly dropped by Pakistani smugglers using a drone, from a field in Sriganganagar district Thursday evening.The contraband, recovered from a field in Chak 5-C Badi near Sujawalpur village, is estimated to be worth more than Rs 7.5 crore in the international market.Police said villagers informed them about a suspicious packet lying in a field belonging to Mandeep Singh. A team led by Hindumalkot SHO Inspector Sunil recovered the packet.The packet, wrapped in tape, had an illuminating stick and a ring attached to it, apparently to help locate it in the dark. It contained two plastic bags totalling 1.530 kg of heroin, kept inside a cloth bag marked ‘999’ and carrying some writing in Urdu.

According to sources familiar with drug trafficking, heroin carrying the 999 marking is considered to be of very high purity.Sriganganagar SP Harishankar Yadav said a case had been registered against unidentified persons under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.Police have not yet established when the consignment was allegedly dropped into Indian territory. They suspect it may have been missed by Indian handlers who were unable to locate it. Police are also examining whether more packets could have been dropped in the area and subsequently picked up by Indian smugglers.The seizure comes three days after police recovered 230 grams of MD drug from another field in the same area. The similar packaging has led police to suspect the use of drones to drop drug consignments across the border.
