Ahmedabad: A controversy has erupted at an university in Ahmedabad following allegations of inappropriate behaviour by a professor towards a student during an event. A video purportedly showing the incident has gone viral on social media. Student organisation NSUI has warned of protests if the professor does not apologise.According to details, the incident occurred during an event organised for students of the electrical and instrumentation department. A stand-up comedy show was underway when the head of department and professor was addressing the gathering from the stage.After a student seated in the audience allegedly made a comment during the programme, the professor allegedly called the student onto the stage, held him by the collar and threatened him in front of the audience. The incident was recorded on video and circulated on social media.Vedant Tomar, state vice president, NSUI, said, “The student body has demanded that the professor H K Patel apologise to the student and that Nirma University conduct an impartial inquiry.” NSUI has also sought a written assurance from the university stating that similar incidents will not occur and a mechanism will be set for students to present their complaints and grievances respectfully to university authorities.When contacted, R N Patel, director general of Nirma University, said that he is not aware of the incident, and will look into it.NSUI warned it will launch a peaceful protest on the university campus if the professor does not apologise and the university fails to provide assurances on preventing such incidents.
