Kalyan: Days after a newborn died during delivery at Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s (KDMC) Shaktidham Maternity Hospital in Kalyan East, the civic health department has ordered the removal of the resident medical officer (RMO) involved in the case. The department has also directed that 25% of the payment payable to the agency that had deployed the doctor be deducted.The RMO, who was working at the hospital through an outsourced agency, was on duty when Rutuja Dinesh Patil was admitted for delivery. The family has alleged medical negligence, claiming there was a delay in taking a decision to perform a Caesarean section despite the condition of the mother and baby.Prasad Borkar, deputy municipal commissioner of health department of KDMC, told TOI, “Health department’s preliminary inquiry found that the RMO failed to inform the gynaecologist about the deteriorating condition of the baby. The preliminary findings indicate that the failure to communicate the baby’s condition to the gynaecologist resulted in a delay in appropriate medical intervention, following which the newborn died.”Borkar said, “We have also asked contractor to provide MBBS doctor as RMO for maternity section to provide better facilities.”Patil had reportedly been undergoing treatment at Shaktidham Hospital for nearly seven months and was admitted at around 7 am on Thursday. According to her family, she was initially advised to wait for a normal delivery. Later, as her condition progressed, the family alleged that they repeatedly requested doctors to consider a Caesarean section.The baby’s condition reportedly deteriorated during labour, with the family claiming that the baby’s heartbeat had dropped. An emergency C-section was subsequently performed, but the newborn could not be saved.
