Aizawl: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) special rapporteur Sayeed Ahmed Baba on Tuesday expressed concern over the difficulties faced by people affected by substance abuse during his visit to Saitual district.Baba stressed the need for counselling and proper treatment facilities, including de-addiction centres, for young people struggling with substance abuse.He made the remarks during a meeting with heads of govt departments at the deputy commissioner’s conference room in Saitual town. The meeting was chaired by DC Srinivas Sadi.Baba said NHRC was established to protect and promote the human rights of every individual and underscored the need to create greater public awareness about people’s rights.He added that the commission’s visits to different parts of the country were aimed at understanding local conditions and learning about good initiatives and practices. He also appreciated the positive measures observed during his visit.Sadi made a presentation on various aspects of Saitual district and assured Baba that the suggestions made during the meeting would be followed up and implemented to the extent possible. Officials from various line departments and representatives of the Young Mizo Association’s sub-headquarters attended the meeting.
