Aizawl: Lawngtlai deputy commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga on Monday called for strict enforcement of laws governing trade and transportation along Mizoram’s border with Myanmar.Addressing a meeting on illegal cross-border trade and transportation in Lawngtlai town, Lalruatsanga directed officials to thoroughly verify goods being transported from the district to Myanmar and scrutinise all trade-related activities.He said violations should invite appropriate action and called for closer investigation into vehicles being purchased or operated in the names of non-Indian citizens, stolen vehicles and the illegal sale or transfer of vehicles.Emphasising Lawngtlai’s location along an international border, the deputy commissioner said the district administration would continue efforts to enforce laws and orders. He also sought the cooperation of voluntary organisations and local residents.Officials from Mizoram Police, Lawngtlai Autonomous District Council, Assam Rifles, Central Young Lai Association and AOC Young Lai Association branch presented reports at the meeting. Participants discussed measures to strengthen monitoring and enforcement along the border.The meeting agreed that the district administration, police and LADC should continue their efforts, while YLA branches located along the international border and other civil society organisations should extend their cooperation.It was noted that several reports of vehicles missing from Mizoram and other parts of the country had already been followed up. AOC Veng YLA branch was also acknowledged for its efforts in tracing such vehicles.The meeting further discussed the growing importance of Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project route through Zorinpui for trade with Myanmar. With activity along the route expected to increase, participants stressed the need for strict compliance with laws and regulations.Civil society organisations, particularly CYLA and YLA branches, were recognised as key partners in supporting govt initiatives. The meeting called for stronger orders from the district administration, sustained follow-up and coordinated enforcement to protect the safety and welfare of residents and the state.The meeting was attended by the additional superintendent of police, SDO (S), an Assam Rifles warrant officer, the LADC taxation officer, representatives of CYLA and AOC YLA branch, and members of Mizoram Journalist Association’s Lawngtlai unit.
