Mumbai: Bandra Kurla Complex police registered a hit-and-run case after a 48-year-old food delivery worker, who had battled severe injuries for almost 50 days, died at a Chembur hospital on Sept 17. Police have yet to arrest the accused vehicle driver. Mansoor Chopdawala, a Kurla (West) resident and sole breadwinner, was struck by an unidentified vehicle near Mumbai University in Santacruz (East) between 10:30 pm and 11 pm on July 29. He was delivering food for Zepto on an electric scooter.Police said the vehicle was being driven at high speed and hit Chopdawala’s scooter, causing severe injuries to his head, leg, ear and eyes. The driver allegedly fled without providing medical assistance. Police have sought CCTV footage from the night of the incident to identify the vehicle. The case was registered after Chopdawala’s wife, Reshma Chopdawala (46), filed a complaint on Friday.Reshma, a homemaker, sold her gold ornaments and borrowed money from relatives and friends to fund her husband’s treatment. He was administered two injections costing Rs 5,000 daily to revive his brain. The injections were provided only after his wife produced her Aadhaar card. “I had sold my gold ornaments and even owe many people money to buy medicines for my husband’s treatment. Our 18-year-old daughter Zahra is yet to come to terms after losing her father. He was the sole bread-winner. I do not know what to do and whether I will get justice,” an emotional Reshma told TOI.Reshma said every time she sold her ornaments to buy the expensive medicines. She said the complaint was filed late as she was busy running around for her husband’s treatment. She does not know whether the company where her husband was employed has approached with any financial help.She said she learnt about the incident when a Zepto driver, Parvesh, called her at 11:10 pm on July 29 and informed her about the accident and her husband’s admission to Bhabha Hospital in Kurla. She and relatives Samreen Bagwan and Shabbir Bagwan went to the hospital, where Zepto colleagues told them that an unknown vehicle had hit Chopdawala while he was riding his electric scooter.He was subsequently shifted to a Chembur hospital on Aug 1 and later to Sion Hospital, where he was admitted. Doctors declared him dead at 5 pm on Sept 17.
