Hyderabad: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen won 15 seats in urban local body elections in Gujarat state but failed to win even a single seat in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, where it won 7 seats in the previous election held in 2021.The AIMIM won 3 seats in Bhuj urban local body, 3 seats in Sikka (Kamnagar), one seat in Sidhpur Taluka, 3 seats in Modasa, 4 seats in Bharuch and 1 seat in Borsad municipal body. However, the performance of Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM in 2026 polls came down compared to its victories in the 2021 elections. Despite Owaisi himself campaigning, and the party fielding its candidates from a large number of seats in municipal bodies in Gujarat, it could win only 15.In 2021, it won 7 seats in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, 9 in Modasa, 7 in Godhra and three in Bharuch. But in the recent elections, the AIMIM faced a washout in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation elections, failing to win a single seat.In 2021, the AIMIM made a strong debut with seven of its candidates winning, including three from Maktampura and four from Jamalpur. Though the party fielded 36 candidates in Muslim-dominated wards this time, the voters rejected it, with several of its candidates losing their security deposits. However, AIMIM Gujarat state president Sabirbhai Kabliwala claimed that the results clearly reflect that AIMIM’s message, its struggle for justice, and its voice for the marginalised sections of society is continuing to receive strong public support. He appealed to all AIMIM workers to remain united and continue to work hard to solve people’s problems.
