LUCKNOW: A 91-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his grandson, who attacked him repeatedly with a spade while he was sleeping at his home in Pure Bhawani village under Dalmau police station on Saturday.The victim, Parmeshwar Yadav, was asleep in his room around 1pm when his 27-year-old grandson, Rupesh alias Sarvan, allegedly entered the room carrying a spade and launched a series of blows at him.The elderly man’s screams alerted family members and neighbours, who rushed to the spot.However, Rupesh allegedly fled immediately after the attack, leaving his grandfather critically injured and bleeding.Family members first rushed Parmeshwar to a community health centre, from where he was referred to the district hospital as his condition remained critical.He was subsequently shifted to AIIMS Raebareli for specialised treatment. Despite efforts to save him, Parmeshwar died during treatment about five hours after the attack.Police reached the village after receiving information about the incident, took custody of the body and initiated post-mortem proceedings.Police launched a search operation after the attack and arrested Rupesh within a few hours.A case was registered at Dalmau police station on a complaint filed by Suman, wife of the victim’s son Jaymal.During questioning, police said the accused admitted to attacking his grandfather.According to the police account, Rupesh told investigators that Parmeshwar exercised considerable authority over the family and that he had been harbouring resentment over the issue for some time.Parmeshwar had four sons, Ramshankar, Jaymal, Sher Bahadur and Subhash. Ramshankar, the father of the accused, had died several years ago, while his other three sons lived away from the village.Family members said Jaymal and Sher Bahadur were in Amritsar when they received news of the attack, while Subhash had also started his journey home.Dalmau police station in-charge Raghavan Kumar Singh said legal proceedings against the accused were underway.
