76-yr-old loses Rs 3.5 lakh to KYC fraud

Kolkata: A septuagenarian resident of Hindusthan Park lodged a complaint with Gariahat police station, alleging that he had lost Rs 3.5 lakh to online fraud. The complainant, Indrajit Mazumder (76), stated that on Sept 15, he had received a call from an unknown person named Subhankar Banerji who allegedly impersonated as an officer from a nationalised bank’s KYC section.As per the complaint, the accused induced him to reveal his bank account details for the fraud. Later, the elderly man discovered that the money had been debited from his four accounts — two accounts with the PSU bank and two others with a private bank.Cops from the cyber crime section have started a probe into the complaint. “The victim alleged that he did not know the accused who called him, posing as a bank officer and duped him of the money. An investigation is underway to trace the money trail and nab the accused. It is found that the fraudsters are targeting elderly people for monetary frauds and we have repeatedly warned citizens of not sharing their bank account details with any unknown person,” said a police officer.
