Kalyan: In a major push to address long-standing traffic concerns, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has floated a tender for the construction of a railway overbridge (ROB) at the busy Mothagaon railway crossing on Retibunder Road in Dombivli. The much-awaited infrastructure project is expected to ease chronic congestion at the level crossing and significantly improve east-west connectivity in the city. Civic officials said the proposed ROB will also enhance travel efficiency for commuters heading towards Thane via the Mankoli flyover. At present, the Mothagaon crossing experiences heavy traffic snarls, particularly during peak hours, as vehicular movement comes to a halt whenever trains pass.Commuters are often forced to wait for extended periods, affecting daily travel and even delaying emergency services. Residents have been demanding a permanent solution to the issue for several years. According to officials, the project, initially planned as a two-lane bridge, has now been upgraded to a four-lane structure to cater to future traffic demands. The development comes following sustained efforts by BJP MLA Ravindra Chavan and local corporator Dipesh Pundlik Mhatre. Speaking on the development, Mhatre said the expanded design would ensure smoother traffic flow and provide long-term relief to commuters. “The ROB will play a crucial role in reducing congestion and improving connectivity, especially for those travelling towards Thane via the Mankoli flyover,” he said. Once completed, the overbridge is expected to cut travel time between Dombivli and Thane from nearly an hour to around 25 minutes, offering faster and more seamless connectivity. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 170 crore and will be executed with support from the railways. The construction timeline has been pegged at 24 months from the date of commencement.
