Bhilwara: A 21-year-old physiotherapy student made her electoral debut a winning one in Jahazpur, while her grandfather, a veteran leader who had won eight times, suffered defeat in the municipality elections whose results were declared Monday.Saniya Khanam, granddaughter of veteran leader Nazir Mohammad, won from Ward 6 as an independent, defeating BJP’s Mamta Pancholi. A physiotherapy student in Kota, Khanam is the youngest councillor in Bhilwara district.In Ward 16, her grandfather Nazir Mohammad, president of the Anjuman Committee, lost to independent candidate Raees KGN. He had won the ward eight times, including three times on a Congress ticket and four times as an independent. He had also been elected once as a nominated councillor.After filing her nomination, Khanam had said that she was influenced by the Gen Z protest in Delhi to enter the electoral fray. After her victory, she said she was inspired by her grandfather and the movement in Delhi.Khanam said she would raise issues on youth education, a better future, and Jahazpur’s development in the municipal board.The results in Jahazpur’s Muslim-majority wards also saw several established faces defeated by newer candidates.
