Drunk driver held after crashing into six vehicles in Bopal

Ahmedabad: A man suspected of driving under the influence crashed his Hyundai i10 car into six parked vehicles, including three cars and three two-wheelers, in South Bopal on Sunday night, sparking panic among residents. Bopal police arrested the driver after locals alerted the police control room.According to a complaint filed by Nishith Shah, a resident of Akshardham Bungalows in South Bopal, the accident occurred around 8.30pm. Shah said he rushed outside after hearing a loud crash and saw a car being driven at high speed in a rash manner. The car rammed into his parked Renault Duster, damaging its rear-right side.Shah said that when he approached the vehicle, he found the driver sprawled across the driver‘s seat and appeared intoxicated. Another resident, Nishith Patil, informed him that the same car had also hit his Hyundai Creta and three two-wheelers parked outside the society. A third resident, Divyaraj Zala, later told them that the i10 had also damaged his Maruti Swift.Residents subsequently dialled 112, following which police arrived at the spot and detained the driver. A case was registered against the driver for allegedly driving under the influence and causing damage to multiple vehicles.Videos recorded by residents after the accident showed the driver apparently struggling to stand, while locals attempting to stop him from leaving the scene. The footage also showed a “POLICE” plate placed on the dashboard.However, the police complaint does not mention the plate displayed on the vehicle, nor does it indicate whether the accused is associated with the police force. Investigators said they would verify the driver‘s identity and determine how the vehicle came to display the “POLICE” plate.
