Surat: Widespread rain across South Gujarat on Monday brought a fresh spell of monsoon activity to the region, with Bharuch receiving 97mm in 12 hours, rivers rising and waterlogging disrupting traffic in parts of Surat city.Bharuch recorded 97mm of rain between 6am and 6pm. Within the district, Hansot received 76mm, Vagra 75mm and Ankleshwar 70mm. Valia also reported 97mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period ended 6am on Monday.In Navsari district, Vansda recorded 83mm and Gandevi 74mm as showers continued across coastal and interior talukas. Surat city received 56mm of rainfall during a 12-hour period on Monday, while Olpad recorded 38mm.Waterlogging at several locations in Surat affected traffic movement and led to congestion on key roads. Fresh showers also damaged road surfaces in some areas, making commuting difficult.Surat Fire and Emergency Services received three calls about fallen trees since Sunday evening. One tree fell on a house near Sahara Darwaja. No casualties were reported. An SFES team removed the tree and secured the affected property.Rising water levels in the Tapi river led authorities to close the weir-cum-causeway to traffic as a precaution. Officials reported discharge from the causeway at 38,308 cusecs.Valsad district recorded some of the highest rainfall figures in the state during the 24 hours ending 6am on Monday. Kaprada received 113mm, followed by Nanapondha with 90mm, Dharampur with 87mm, Vapi with 79mm and Umargam with 67mm.Rainfall in the Ukai reservoir catchment increased inflows into the dam. The reservoir’s water level stood at 336.67 ft against the rule level of 340 ft. Authorities continue to monitor rainfall intensity, river levels and reservoir statuses.
