Gurgaon: The 37-day sanitation workers’ strike may have ended, but the city’s garbage crisis is far from over.On Monday, 100 sanitation-related complaints remained pending on MCG’s social media complaints dashboard, the day after the workers resumed duty. The total number of unresolved complaints across three categories stood at 181.The backlog was not limited to sanitation. As many as 74 complaints related to engineering works, including roads and sewerage, and seven concerning construction and demolition (C&D) waste were also pending.The zone-wise data showed that zone 1 had the highest number of pending sanitation complaints at 26, followed by zone 6 with 25 and zone 4 with 22. Zone 5 had 14 complaints, while zone 3 recorded 11. Zone 2 had the lowest number, with two pending complaints.The pending complaints also point to concerns over MCG’s grievance-redressal mechanism. While social media platforms allow residents to report civic problems, the number of unresolved complaints suggests that registering a grievance does not always result in timely action.An MCG official told TOI, “With the sanitation workers resuming services, garbage will be cleaned and all these complaints will be resolved.”The issue also came under scrutiny during the MCG House meeting on Friday, when councillors questioned the functioning of waste collection arrangements. They alleged that vehicles hired under short-term contracts for garbage collection existed only on paper and were not operating effectively on the ground.Public concern over waste disposal continues to grow. On Sunday, residents staged a protest against alleged waste dumping along Golf Course Road Extension, citing foul odour, environmental degradation and health risks associated with unchecked garbage disposal.The allegations have raised questions about the effectiveness of the corporation’s temporary waste management arrangements and its ability to ensure that hired vehicles are actually deployed for garbage collection.
