Varanasi: A 25-year-old woman, who had left her husband and five-year-old son and later married his younger brother, was found hanging under suspicious circumstances at her home in Chillupur village under Mehnajpur police station on Saturday evening.Azamgarh SP Anil Kumar said on Sunday that the post-mortem report had confirmed that the woman, identified as Babita, died by suicide. However, following a complaint by her parents alleging that she had been assaulted and harassed for dowry, police registered a named FIR against her first husband Anand Rajbhar (29) and his younger brother Rajan Rajbharc(26), with whom she had subsequently started living. Both accused were arrested on Sunday, the SP said.Babita, a native of Maudha in Ghazipur district, had married Anand around six years ago. The couple had a five-year-old son. According to family members, Babita later came in contact with Anand’s younger brother, Rajan.In May 2026, Babita allegedly left her marital home with Rajan and travelled to Mumbai. The two returned to Chillupur in July this year. With the consent of the family, Babita and Rajan later got married through a notary affidavit at Lalganj tehsil on August 7.On Saturday evening, Babita was found hanging from a sari at the house. Police reached the spot and sent her body for postmortem.
