Mumbai: The National Lok Adalat held on Saturday in courts under the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mumbai, settled 24,252 cases and recovered Rs 749.23 crore. In Thane, motorists with pending e-challan fines could settle their cases through the National Lok Adalat, resulting in the disposal of 7,001 cases and recovery of Rs 1.57 crore in pending fines.Lok Adalats can settle any pending court case or pre-litigation dispute, provided both parties agree to a compromise and the matter does not involve a non-compoundable criminal offenseThe cases settled included criminal compoundable cases, matters under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act relating to dishonour of cheques, payment and settlement matters and cases under various other Acts.The programme was conducted with the efforts of T. S. Akali, Member Secretary, Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority, High Court, Bombay; A. T. Wankhede, Principal Judge, City Civil and Sessions Court, Greater Bombay, and Chairperson, Mumbai District Legal Services Authority; S. S. Budruk, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Esplanade, Mumbai; and V. D. Deshmukh, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Mumbai.Additional Chief Judicial Magistrates, Judicial Magistrates First Class, judicial officers and staff members working under their supervision also contributed to the implementation of the National Lok Adalat.
