Bank unions call for strike today

Panaji: The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has given a call for a one-day nationwide bank strike on Friday after talks with Centre over its demands hit a dead end.As a result, banking services across Goa could face an extended five-day closure due to a combination of the strike, weekend holidays and Ganesh Chaturthi festival.Digital banking channels, UPI, and internet banking will remain operational. Local ATMs may face cash dry-outs due to the consecutive holidays, the union said.“As Goa prepares to celebrate the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, UFBU Goa appeals to all bank customers, households, and business owners to withdraw sufficient cash and make necessary financial provisions in advance to avoid any inconvenience during the festive season,” said UFBU Goa convener Santosh Haldankar. The unions’ demands include a five-day banking week, withdrawal or modification of the revised performance-linked incentive (PLI) scheme through bilateral discussions, and resolution of other pending issues. The unions have also called a three-day nationwide strike over Sep 28-30 and have announced an indefinite strike from Oct 26 if their demands remain unresolved.
