MUMBAI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested Ashishkumar Maniya in connection with an alleged attempt to illegally export diamonds worth over Rs 10 crore by concealing them in an export consignment at the Bharat Diamond Bourse in Mumbai.The Special Investigation and Intelligence Branch, Airport Special Cargo, Mumbai Customs Zone-III, examined a consignment filed by Zeel Impex on September 8.The shipping bill declared 61.98 carats of lab-grown cut and polished diamonds valued at Rs 5.10 lakh, packed in a tin box weighing 6.8 kg. The alleged scheme was adopted after India imposed anti-dumping duty on industrial laser machines originating in or exported from China in December 2023. Investigators allegedly found that machines were manufactured in China, shipped to Indonesia and subsequently exported to India with fresh documentation showing Indonesian origin.The agency relied on emails, WhatsApp and other electronic communications. In his statement recorded under Section 108 of the Customs Act, Bhandari allegedly admitted that he was aware of the anti-dumping duty and accepted that the machines were manufactured in China. He allegedly told investigators that the arrangement was designed to avoid the duty.
