Plaint after Setu road rage case, defamation

Kolkata: The Hastings Police started a criminal case involving charges of defamation, criminal intimidation and wrongful restraint after a road-rage incident on Vidyasagar Setu on April 24. The case was registered on Sunday.According to the complainant, an advocate, a cab driver endangered his life and launched a malicious social media campaign to tarnish his professional reputation. On Friday afternoon, when the lawyer and his wife were travelling towards the high court on a scooter, the cab reportedly squeezed the two-wheeler towards the flyover’s railing. While a fatal accident was narrowly avoided, the encounter escalated into a heated confrontation. The complainant alleged that when he attempted to question the driver’s conduct, the accused refused to exit his vehicle and instead unleashed a torrent of derogatory abuse. The driver reportedly issued open threats of physical assault and used his larger vehicle to obstruct the lawyer’s path, preventing him from proceeding toward the court. The situation took a new turn the following day when the lawyer discovered the driver recorded a “selective and manipulated” video of the argument, which was uploaded on social media. The lawyer contends that the video, which has garnered nearly 40,000 views, presents a false narrative. Investigators are currently verifying the vehicle’s details and the digital evidence to trace the driver.
