Punjab govt to convene special Assembly session on May 1: CM Mann

Chandigarh: The Punjab council of ministers on Tuesday decided to convene a special session of the state’s legislative assembly on May 1 to “pay homage to the working class of the state”,.The session will be closely watched as it comes close on the heels of defection of AAP’s seven Rajya Sabha members to the BJP on April 24. However, there was no confirmation whether or not the matter could be discussed during the session.Taking to X, CM Bhagwant Mann cited “the occasion of Labour Day” to call the session. “This one-day session will be dedicated to the hardworking labourers and artisans who make a vital contribution to the country’s social and economic development,” he said.He further wrote, “As part of this historic initiative, representatives of labour unions will be invited to the House as special guests.”According to a statement issued by the state govt, the session will also discuss emerging challenges to the working class in the wake of national and international developments. Legislative business will be finalised by the business advisory committee of the assembly, the statement added. “In addition, during the session, other essential legislative business as determined by the business advisory committee will be carried out in accordance with established procedures, ensuring that key decisions necessary for the state’s development and the strengthening of democracy are undertaken,” the CM’s post concluded.The chief minister’s office said during the session, the assembly will also discuss the castigating effects of the political reconstitution of MGNREGA into VB G-Ram-G scheme on labour and working class.
