Ahmedabad: Rajkot’s Jaynil Mehta stopped Ahmedabad’s Abhilash Raval juggernaut, beating the top seed 4-1 in the men’s final of the 5th Gujarat State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament in Surat.The tournament is being organised by the Table Tennis Association of Surat District under the aegis of the Gujarat State Table Tennis Association.The second-seeded Jaynil remained in control of the match from the onset to pocket his maiden title of the season and at the same time denied the top seed a third title of the season.In the U-19 boys’ final, top seed Janmejay Patel of Aravalli maintained his unbeaten run through the season, defeating third seed Abhilaksh Patel of Ahmedabad 4-3 in a seven-game thriller. However, the victory came not in an easy manner as Janmejay overcame a 0-2 deficit to score a comeback win to bring home his season’s fifth straight U-19 title.Ahmedabad’s second seed Malav Panchal edged top seed Ved Panchal of Vadodara 3-2 to grab the U-17 boys’ title, his second of the season.Pratha, Mouboni, Filzah, Aafrien enter women’s semifinals: Top seed Pratha Pawar of Ahmedabad defeated Siddhi Bulsara of Navsari 3-1, while fourth seed Mouboni Chatterjee of Ahmedabad beat Siddhi Patel 3-0 in the women’s quarterfinals. Sixth seed Filzahfatema Kadri of Surat upset third seed Riya Jayswal of Bhavnagar 3-1, while her citymate and second seed Aafrien Murad of Surat strolled past Shuchee Patel of Gandhinagar 3-1 to complete the women’s semis line-up.U-15 boys, girls quarterfinal line-ups setIn the U-15 boys’ draw, second seed Anay Bachhawat of Surat, fourth seed Ansh Khamar of Ahmedabad and third seed Dhruv Bhambhani of Kachchh advanced to the quarterfinals along with unseeded paddlers Yohaan Choudhary, Akhil Achha and Priyansh Agrawal of Surat, Ahmedabad’s Naksh Patel and Kachchh’s Yug Pratap Singh.In the U-15 girls’ category, top seed Daniya Godil of Surat, second seed Khanak Shah of Ahmedabad, third seed Zinali Patel of Ahmedabad and fourth seed Krishna Patel of Vadodara led the quarterfinal line-up.
