Ex-militants block Tripura road, seek rehab package

Agartala: The situation in Tripura’s Baramura Hills turned tense on the second day of a road blockade by former militants demanding a rehabilitation package, posing fresh challenges for police. The protest has stranded many vehicles, disrupting patients, travellers and candidates heading for exams. People needing urgent medical care have been forced to wait as movement remains restricted. Concern grew after an ambulance carrying a patient was reportedly stopped and confronted on Saturday by protesters led by NLFT leader Prasenjit Debbarma. The 72-hour blockade by former NLFT and ATTF members is pressing an 11-point charter, including rehabilitation benefits and inclusion of about 1,200 more “returnees.” The govt said benefits depend on verification and screening, and cited a Rs 250-crore tribal development package. Opposition netas alleged political motives behind the continuing disruption.
