New Delhi: Nearly 240 km of PWD roads across Delhi’s north, east and south zones will undergo micro-surfacing in 2026-27, with govt approving projects worth Rs 93.2 crore, officials said.Micro-surfacing is a preventive road-maintenance treatment in which a thin protective layer is laid over the existing surface to seal minor cracks, improve skid resistance and prevent water ingress, thereby extending the life of roads without requiring complete reconstruction.The largest project has been sanctioned for the North Zone, where 152.4 km of roads will be micro-surfaced at a cost of Rs 48 crore. The network includes roads in areas such as Model Town, Shalimar Bagh, Rohini, Narela and Bawana.In the East Zone, PWD has approved micro-surfacing of 59.3 km of roads at a cost of Rs 32.8 crore. The works will cover roads in areas including Patparganj, Vishwas Nagar and Shahdara.The South Maintenance Zone will see micro-surfacing of 28.1 km of roads at a cost of Rs 12.3 crore. The sanctioned works will cover roads with a right-of-way of less than 30 metres. The broader network includes areas such as Malviya Nagar, Mehrauli, Chhatarpur and Deoli.Together, the three projects will cover 239.8 km of roads.PWD has directed field divisions to examine roads that are still under the Defect Liability Period (DLP). In such cases, micro-surfacing should not be undertaken at govt cost if damage is attributable to defective workmanship or materials for which contractors remain responsible.The department has also stipulated that the projects be completed within the approved cost and timeline, with no provision for cost escalation. Tenders will be invited in accordance with applicable procurement rules and Delhi Schedule of Rates.
