Varanasi: A state-of-the-art Orbital Navigation System was inaugurated at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO), IMS-BHU on Thursday, marking a significant advancement in precision orbital and craniofacial surgery. The system is the first-of-its-kind orbital navigation technology to be introduced in Uttar Pradesh.The advanced navigation system was inaugurated by BHU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi in the presence of Prof. S N Sankhwar, Director, IMS; Prof. Sanjay Gupta, Dean, Faculty of Medicine; Prof. Puneet, Medical Superintendent, SSH; Prof. R P Maurya, Head, RIO, IMS, along with senior officials, faculty members, clinicians, residents and other dignitaries of the institute.A live demonstration of the Orbital Navigation System was conducted by Prof. Akhilesh Kumar Singh, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, and Prof. Ashish Verma, Department of Radiodiagnosis, showcasing its advanced capabilities and applications in complex orbital and craniofacial surgery.The Orbital Navigation System represents a major technological advancement that enables surgeons to accurately identify, localise and navigate complex anatomical structures during surgical procedures. By integrating advanced medical imaging with real-time surgical navigation, the system is expected to enhance precision, safety and accuracy in the management of complex orbital diseases and trauma.The technology will be particularly valuable in the surgical management of orbital tumours, orbital trauma, complex craniofacial injuries, orbital reconstruction, skull-base lesions and other challenging orbital conditions. It facilitates precise localisation of lesions and critical anatomical structures while enabling improved preoperative planning and intraoperative surgical guidance.The facility will provide an important platform for training postgraduate students, residents and faculty in image-guided and navigation-assisted surgery. It is also expected to create new opportunities for clinical research, innovation and advanced surgical education at the institute.The programme also included a felicitation ceremony for family members of eye donors as part of the 41st National Eye Donation Fortnight.
