2,380 posts vacant in Haryana jails dept; 67% of Group C posts unfilled

Ambala: Haryana’s jails department has 2,380 vacancies against a sanctioned strength of 4,948 posts, with Group C and D accounting for most of the shortfall, according to a govt reply in the Haryana assembly.The reply by jail minister Arvind Kumar Sharma to an unstarred question by Mullana MLA Pooja showed that 2,568 employees are currently in position. The vacancies comprise 67 Group A, eight Group B, 2,045 Group C and 260 Group D posts.The biggest shortfall is among warders, with 1,427 of 3,010 male warder posts and 116 of 179 female warder posts vacant. The govt said requisitions for 1,039 male and 112 female warders were sent to the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) in Nov 2025. The Physical Measurement Test has been completed and the Physical Screening Test is awaited.There are also 57 vacancies among 107 assistant superintendents (jail) and 46 among 100 clerks. Requisitions for both categories have been sent to HSSC.Medical and paramedical posts are similarly understaffed, with 35 of 42 pharmacist posts, 19 of 20 laboratory technician posts and 17 of 18 radiographer posts vacant. All 21 clinical psychologist posts are vacant. The department said it was coordinating with the Health Department for medical staff and using stop-gap arrangements where required.Among Group-D posts, 230 of 333 sweeper posts and 24 of 56 cook posts are vacant. Recruitment through HSSC, the Health Department and Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam Ltd is being pursued.The govt said recruitment, promotions, deputations and other measures were being taken to fill vacancies while ensuring uninterrupted functioning of jails.
