Guwahati: Drug traffickers have established a new trafficking corridor from Changlang district in Arunachal Pradesh through Tinsukia in Assam to other parts of the country, in addition to existing routes through Manipur and Mizoram, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday.Sarma made the remarks after attending the passing-out parade of 32 deputy superintendents of police (probationers) and 371 constables of the Assam Police communication branch at Lachit Borphukan Police Academy (LBPA) in Dergaon, Golaghat district.Lauding Assam Police’s campaign against drug trafficking, CM said the fight against drugs remained a major priority of govt. He also emphasised the need for a strong and professionally trained police force to tackle organised crime and other emerging security challenges.Sarma inspected the parade and presented awards to personnel who had demonstrated outstanding performance during their training.Congratulating the newly inducted personnel, he urged them to uphold discipline, courage and professional integrity while carrying out their responsibilities.Highlighting the academy’s role in strengthening Assam Police, Sarma said it would soon be upgraded into a premier national institute for police training. He said the academy had been receiving requests from other states to train their police personnel and had trained around 21,000 officers and personnel over the years.He also announced that the state govt would recruit 15,000-20,000 more youths into the police force, stressing the need to further strengthen the force while creating employment opportunities for young people.Sarma said police personnel were now being trained in modern techniques to tackle cybercrime. He added that govt would adopt a stricter approach towards drug-related offences and crimes against women and children.“We will discuss these issues with the top police officials for the next two days at the SP conference and consider necessary steps,” he said.
