Ropar: Taking note of the breach in the berm of the Sirhind canal near Chamkaur Sahib, Ropar deputy commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal has ordered a committee headed by the SDM to conduct a high-level inquiry.On Wednesday, the DC said a survey of the entire Sirhind Canal berm in Rupnagar district had been initiated to prevent recurrence. A proposal has also been submitted to the Punjab govt to raise, widen and strengthen the 1.75-km-long berm from the incident site at Jatana village.A proposal was also being sent to the state govt to widen and raise the main bridge connecting Sri Chamkaur Sahib with Bela-Behrampur to facilitate residents’ movement, Dachalwal said.He said if the panel reports negligence on the part of any official, appropriate departmental action will be ensured against him.Meanwhile, canal department officials said the Sirhind Canal was operating at full capacity due to the paddy season. Leakage occurred around 5.30 am at Burji No. 55600/R near Chamkaur Sahib, causing the road over the adjoining canal bank/berm to subside.The department had already stocked soil-filled EC bags for canal safety during the paddy season. With these bags and help from local villagers, the leakage was plugged by 8.30 am. The damaged road was subsequently restored using soil, machinery, and tippers.
