Ganga river crosses warning level, boat services suspended in Varanasi

VARANASI: Boat services on the Ganga have been suspended in Varanasi after the river crossed its warning level, with the district administration increasing surveillance in flood-hit areas, officials said on Wednesday.The Central Water Commission recorded the Ganga’s water level at70.29 metres, slightly above the warning mark of 70.26 metres. The danger level is 71.26 metres, while the highest flood level is 73.90 metres.With the water continuing to rise, authorities have advised residents and devotees to stay away from the ghats and avoid entering areas where strong currents are present.The administration is also keeping a close watch on the Ganga and Varuna rivers, along with areas affected by waterlogging and flooding along the Varuna, officials said.Flooding has partially affected around 11 localities and wards in the district. The Varuna river has affected 328 families, or 1,388 people, according to officials.The administration is making arrangements to move affected families to safer areas whenever necessary and has stepped up relief and rescue preparations.Thirteen relief camps have been established across the district. At present, 935 people from 219 affected families are staying in these camps, officials said.District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar directed officials to remain on alert and maintain regular surveillance in the affected areas. He also ordered them to ensure the immediate evacuation of residents to safer places whenever required.Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal directed police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to maintain round-the-clock vigilance in flood-affected areas and respond quickly to any emergency, officials said.
