Lucknow: After ample rainfall in the city throughout Aug, monsoon continued with rain and thundershowers on Tuesday, the first day of Sep.Overnight rains gave way to partly cloudy sky in the morning. The weather remained humid till till 3 pm when the sky was suddenly overcast and heavy thundershowers followed for about 40 minutes. It continued to drizzle till late evening, making conditions pleasant.According the India Meteorological Department, the state capital is expected to witness cloudy skies and a few spells of rains or thundershowers on Wednesday and Thursday as well.Regional Meteorological Centre, Lucknow headquarters, located on the outskirts at Amausi, recorded 31.4 mm rainfall till 8.30am. RMC observatory recorded only 9mm rainfall during the day.Rainfall in main city areas was heavy. Rain gauge at Chinhat recorded 67.5 mm and the one in Jan Bhavan measured 67 mm. Similarly, Ambedkar Park recorded 55 mm and Janeshwar Mishra Park 27.5 mm.Total rainfall in the city from Jun 1 till Aug 31 this year was 507.4 mm against the normal 519.3 mm, which was 2% below normal.In comparison, rainfall till Jul 31 was 44% below normal with only 176.8 mm rains in Jun and Jul, an improvement of 42 percentage points.Aug this year recorded 330.6 mm rains against 202 mm, the normal for the month. The quantum of rain in Aug was nearly 80% more than the total rainfall in Jun and Jul combined.According to Met scientists, the monsoon trough line—an elongated low pressure area—is passing through east UP. There has been constant moisture feed from the Bay of Bengal. The two factors resulted in light to heavy rainfall in most parts of the east UP, including in Lucknow. Rainfall in western UP was comparitively less.RMC senior scientist Mohammad Danish predicted that light to moderate widespread rains in UP are expected to continue for the next 3-4 days due to the active monsoon conditions. Rainfall may be heavy at isolated places, he added.Meanwhile, Kunda in Pratapgarh recorded 150 mm rainfall, which was highest in the state, followed by Robertsganj in Sonbhadra 140 mm and 130 mm in Ankinghat of Kanpur Nagar.
