Ahmedabad: Within minutes of activating her credit card, a banker was shocked to receive emails alerting her about two hefty transactions that she had not made. What made the fraud even more puzzling was that she had received no one-time password (OTP) on her phone to approve the transactions totalling Rs 1.7 lakh.She has now approached Vastrapur police for answers.According to her complaint, the 26-year-old woman, who works as an NRR officer with a private bank, had received an Axis Bank credit card and wanted to activate it. She searched Google for the bank’s registered mobile number and used WhatsApp banking to activate the card around 8pm while she was at home.Soon after the activation, two transaction alerts landed in her email inbox. One payment was for Rs 1,42,808, while the other was for Rs 28,397. Together, the two unauthorised transactions amounted to Rs 1,71,205.The banker told police that she had neither approved the payments nor received or shared any OTP with anyone.The timing of the debits has added to the mystery. Police are now examining whether the card details were compromised during activation or whether the transactions were completed through another mechanism that did not require an OTP.After noticing the unauthorised payments, the woman informed a friend and called the customer-care number printed on the card. She also contacted the national cybercrime helpline and filed an online complaint with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.The cybercrime complaint acknowledgement was generated on July 22, the day of the incident. She later approached Vastrapur police and lodged a formal complaint on Tuesday.
