Jaipur: Rajasthan has reported a sharp rise in swine flu (H1N1) cases in Aug, with 32 people testing positive in the fourth week alone, taking the state’s monthly tally to 72 till Aug 28.According to health department data, five cases were reported between Aug 1 and 7. The number rose to 17 in the second week, from Aug 8 to 14, and further to 18 between Aug 15 and 21. The highest weekly count was recorded between Aug 22 and 28, when 32 people tested positive.The 72 cases reported in Aug are significantly higher than the two cases recorded during the corresponding period last year. With the Aug spike, the state’s H1N1 tally for 2026 has reached 163.The health department is monitoring H1N1 and seasonal influenza cases across the state. Data showed fluctuations in the number of cases over the past seven months, with two cases reported in Jan, three in Fe, 20 in Mar, 22 in April, 25 in May, 14 in June and five in July.Principal secretary (health and medical education) Gayatri Rathore said there was no confirmation of the emergence of any new or more severe strain of H1N1. Citing the Indian Council of Medical Research, she said the currently circulating H1N1 virus was already active and there was no need for panic.“People must remain cautious, seek timely medical advice and avoid believing rumours. Those experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat or weakness should consult a doctor and take medicines only as prescribed,” Rathore said.She also cautioned people against taking antibiotics or antiviral medicines without medical advice and changing dosages or continuing medication for prolonged periods without consulting a doctor.The department has directed all govt medical institutions to ensure adequate arrangements for examination, treatment and referral of patients whenever required.People with flu-like symptoms have been advised to avoid schools, offices, public functions and crowded places. Citizens have also been urged to avoid unnecessary close contact with infected or symptomatic people.
