Gurgaon: A case was registered on Friday against 75 people, a day after protesters blocked a road following a youth’s death in Faridabad.Protesters blocked Bypass Road at Kheripul Chowk on Thursday evening by placing the body of 38-year-old Niyaz Mohammad — who had died in a road accident — disrupting traffic for a prolonged period.The case was registered at Old Faridabad police station against five named accused — Jahir, Furkan, Imam, Imran and Prem — besides 70 other people, after police’s attempts to clear the road failed.According to police, Niyaz had met with the accident on Aug 23 after his bike was hit by an SUV. Niyaz died during treatment on Aug 27.In the evening, around 60-70 people gathered at Kheripul police station and later blocked Bypass Road. The protesters raised anti-police slogans and alleged that the Scorpio car was being driven on the wrong side.Police spokesperson Yashpal Yadav (SI) said, “The blockade brought traffic movement to a halt, leading to long queues of vehicles on both sides. Ambulances and vehicles carrying essential materials were also caught in the congestion, causing considerable inconvenience to commuters and affecting the movement of emergency and essential-service vehicles.”Police personnel and officers at the spot tried to persuade the protesters to remove the blockade. They explained that action would be taken according to law in connection with the accident and informed them that a case concerning the accident had already been registered.But the protesters continued to block the road and obstruct traffic for hours. With the road remaining blocked, police initiated legal action against those involved in creating the jam and disrupting vehicular movement.Yashpal said citizens have the right to raise their concerns and seek action in connection with any incident, but blocking a public road and preventing the movement of commuters can create a law-and-order challenge. “The situation becomes serious when ambulances, fire brigade vehicles and other emergency or essential-service vehicles are unable to move freely because of a road blockade,” he added.
